The above second and third place finishes in the Lakes Region Meet held at the exclusive New Hampton School for Boys reflect the best times in the heat because there were no finals because of the inclement wintry weather of 34 degrees with a wind chill of 19 degrees. Also note that I had a slightly pulled right hamstring muscle. The cold wind was blowing off Lake Winnipesaukee pictured below. Other schools participating in the Lakes Region Meet were: Brewster Academy, Holderness School, Phillips Exeter Academy and Tilton School.
Note that I broke the state record in the 100 yard dash in this meet in Kent Hills. But the track had a slight downgrade therefore the record did not stand.
As where all my training took place, the above meet was held at the site of the Fryeburg Fair which was on a horse track. The Fryeburg Fair is known throughout New England and the East Coast.
The above two ribbons were for first place finishes at the Maine State Prep School Meet in which I broke a record in the 100 yard dash which was disallowed because of the wind. In retrospect, I think if I had been pushed that spring, I could have possibly run 9.6 in the 100 yard dash.
*My brother, Thomas J. Saunders, Jr. ('54-'57) was also a member of the Fryeburg Academy track team who performed admirably in the 440 yard run which is now called the 400 meter dash.

I came in first in my heat in the 100 yard and 220 yard dashes at the Lake Region Meet. There was no finals because of the cold wintry weather. So they took the best times in the heat to determine who would come in first, second and third.
I never lost one race in head to head competition during the entire track season of 1962 while running the 100 and 220 yard dash. I never lost in the Broad Jump also.
Thank you.
