University of Pittsburgh alumnus K. Leroy Irvis, who was the first African American Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and the first Black Speaker of any state legislature since Reconstruction, sponsored the bill that made Pitt, Lincoln, Penn State, and Temple universities state-related institutions. He was instrumental in the legislation that established Pennsylvania's community colleges and the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency. He was a true friend to the University of Pittsburgh and to higher education.
