In 1987, Jean Bryant, reporter for the Pittsburgh Press and blogger Black Buzz (Ronald B. Saunders) received the Annual Humanitarian Award from Nate Smith, Chairman of world famous Operation Dig Careers, Inc.
That year's event (DINNER) was held at the HYATT PITTSBURGH at Chatham Center on Saturday, June 13, 1987.

Time: Cocktails 6:00 P.M.---Dinner 7 : 00 P.M.

Words from the Chairman
As the material rejected by the builders becomes the building's cornerstone, so too Operation Dig, in its 19 years of servicing society's cast-offs, has been vital to the community's structure. Once a year, we hold a Dinner to draw attention to that fact.

This year our Dinner comes at an advantageous time: The kickoff of the 1988 national elections: determination that Pittsburgh will have a better chance at truer representative government through district elections: the likely return of black representation to City Council and the second try for the presidency by a black, the Rev. Jesse Jackson. If I sound political, it's because we live in a political world. Use your own political clout in the coming months to keep on top of the issues, to speak out and to vote.

Thank you for honoring our dinner with your presence.

I love you, admire you and respect you.

Your Black Brother and Friend

Nate Smith
