The Steelers Need To Sign former Bears & Raiders Star Willie Gault

Why did the Steelers sign an average at best over the hill wide receiver in Antwaan Randle El, when the great Willie Gault was available who can still play rings around a player like Randle El, even at the age of 50.
Gault played in a Bears offense that was geared to running the football with one of the greatest running backs in the game in Walter Payton.
Gault's receiving stats improved with the Raider's flinging the ball more, and Gault was one of the greatest receivers in NFL history.
Further Willie Gault's statistics compare favorably to the vastly overrated Steeler Hall of Famer, Lynn Swann, who should have been barred from Canton based upon his whole body of work.
Check out these career stats for Willie Gault and Lynn Swann :
1. Gault- Number of years played- 11
2. Swann-Number of years played-9
1.Gault-Number of Receptions- 333
2.Swann-Number of Receptions-336
*1. Gault-Receiving Yards-6,635
2.Swann- Receiving Yards- 5,462
*1.Gault- Avg. 19.9 Per Catch
2. Swann-Avg. 16.3 Per Catch
1.Gault- Number of Touchdowns-44
2.Swann- Number of Touchdowns-51
1. Gault- Number One Draft Choice-18 Overall player selected in 1983.
2. Swann-Number One Draft Choice-21 Overall player selected in 1974.
* Both Gault and Swann were All-Americans. Gault at Tennessee and Swann at the University of Southern California.

Analysis of Gault & Swann's Career Statistics

Gault averaged more yards per catch than Swann which means he was more productive and Willie ran more fluid routes than Swannie. Gault got better separation on the ball than Swann because of his blinding speed and his hands were much better than Swann, who also very good hands.
Swann has three more receptions than Gault, but Gault has 6,635 total receiving yards to Swann's lowly 5, 462.
I guess if you lobby long enough, and have the right people behind you can get into Canton. Art Monk was far more deserving than Swann in making it into Canton.
So How did Swann make it into Canton ?
Yes Gault played two more years than Swann, who was to chicken to continually playing with the Steelers after helping them win four Super Bowls.
The Raider's George Atkinson and Jack Tatum intimidated Swann so bad he was afraid to run pass patterns over the middle against the Raider's and other teams.
Swann had a great running mate at the other Wide Out position in John Stallworth, who is still considered one of the best to play the position.
How many people remember the other Bear and Raider Wide Receivers ?
Who was the other Bear starting Wide Receiver on that 1985 team that had one of the greatest defensive teams in the history of the NFL ?(One year wonders)
Gault had four catches in Super Bowl XX for 129 yards, and he returned four kick-offs for another 49 yards.
Gault was one of the most dangerous Kick returners in NFL history, and teams always attempted avoid kicking to Gault.
Gault was one of the fastest men to ever play in the NFL. Willie ran the 100 in 9.2. Bullet Bob Hayes ran the 100 yard dash in 9.1. Willie Gault was part of the World Record breaking 4 X 100 Meter Relay Team at Tennessee, and Willie made the 1980 U.S. Olympic team in the 110 High Hurdles. Also note this was the same Olympics 1980, that President Jimmy Carter chose to boycott because of the Cold War conflicts with the USSR.
* The only present NFL players that could presently beat Gault, who is age 50 in the 40 yard dash, are Chris Johnson, Reggie Bush, and perhaps five or six other players.
Willie Gault has already run a 4.4 forty this year and how many Steelers can run 4.4, now that not so fast Willie Parker has signed with the Skins ?
I can assume that Parker will play on the special teams for the Skins, who also have two journeyman backs in Portis and Larry Johnson.
Age my good friends is only a number and Willie Gault is in the best shape of his life.
Willie Gault never truly lived up to all that potential and ( If ) he would have played in a system like the Dallas Cowboys of the 1990's he would be in Canton alongside " Bad News Michael Irvin.

Count the Eagles' Desean Jackson as another current player that could probably beat Willie in the 40 (that guy looks like he runs a 4.2). Nevertheless, I talked to Geoff Petrie over the weekend and he confirmed what you say about Willie Gault. He saw a feature story on TV that showed that Gault has not aged at all and could still probably play if he wanted to! Now the silly-Steelers definitely need a wideout since they (unwisely) traded Santonio Holmes to New York for practically nothing ! I'd like to know if you think that the Steeler's treatment of Holmes was racist. Especially considering that Ben Roethlisberger will undoubtedly remain a Steeler. Perhaps a subject for a future blog....

RayP in order to show a prima facie case of disparate treatment I would have to know whether there are any white NFL players that were treated differently than Santonio Holmes under the same or like circumstances or condictions.
The present NFL Commissioner is Rooney's boy but we have to make sure that all discipline is being administered in a fair, consistent and objective manner.
The NFL is not immune to charges of racism or racial discrimination but the difficult part is proving those allegations.
Most of the Owners are white and there are a few Afro's in central positions of power within the Commissioner's office and Gm's cadre of front men.
Uncle Ben is in dire need of help. What we have in the case of Big Ben is a classic case of poor judgement. Life is about choices and Big Ben's choice of following that coed into a small restroom when they both had been drinking heavily is inexcusable. Did she invite him into said restroom ? What role did Big Ben's so-called Body guard play in soliciting said coed ? Did we have an independent DNA analysis of said everything ? If not ?
Why not ? That is the punk thing to do take advantage of a women when she is inebriated. Hell he knew she was high. Men who don't have a game always seem to try to lure a women with drugs and alcohol. When i was in college I used to see weak men attempt to do the same thing that Old Big Ben tried to do. What really happened in that small restroom in Georgia between Big Ben and that coed ? Very often the D.A. will not proceed in a rape case if the victim is not willing to testify or won't testify. Typically the D.A. will drop the charges against the actor, who will be set free. The victim in Big Ben's case chose to drop the case because she was too embarrased because of her state of drunkeness or she was paid off. And the D. A. probably said without her testimony I don't have a case that I can proof beyond a reasonable doubt.
The Jury is still out on old Uncle Ben. The wages of sin is death.

Mr Black Buzz - thanks for your comments. I guess we'll have to wait and see how the Rooneys handle Big Ben going forward, before we can make an analysis of whether or not Santonio was treated unfairly based on race. I think that we can say that Ben's choices were as bad - if not worse than - Santonio's. We'll see. To be continued...
