Black African slaves in Massachusetts petitioned for freedom on January 6,1773 and Massachusetts abolishes slavery in its state Constitution in 1780. The state of Vermont(Colony ) was the first state or colony to formally abolish African slavery in 1777. Vermont was formerly part of the state or colony of New York.
